What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an English language proficiency test used for study, work and migration in many countries. Students can also understand the IELTS exam structure before starting preparation. IELTS tests four communication skills. These skills are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
For students who want to study outside their country IELTS Academic is usually the exam they take for undergraduate and postgraduate study. IELTS General Training is for people who need English for work, training or moving to another country. The Reading and Writing parts are different between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The Listening and Speaking parts are the same, for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.
IELTS Syllabus & Exam Pattern
Listening
Approximately 30 minutes
The Listening section assesses your ability to understand spoken English in different situations. You may encounter conversations, monologues, and a variety of question types while listening to the recordings.
Reading
60 minutes
The Reading module assesses the candidate’s reading comprehension skills. The difficulty level of the examination varies for Academic and General Training examinations.
Writing
60 minutes
The Writing module comprises two tasks. For the IELTS Academic examination, Task 1 involves describing visual information while Task 2 is an essay-writing task. On the other hand, for the IELTS General Training examination, Task 1 requires writing a short letter while Task 2 is similar to the academic module.
Speaking
11-14 minutes
The Speaking module is a face-to-face interaction with the examiner comprising three tasks to evaluate the candidate’s speaking and listening skills. The objective of this module is to assess the candidate’s ability to express themselves effectively in English.

IELTS scores are accepted by universities, educational institutions, employers and other organisations in many countries across the world. However, the requirements may differ from one university, course, visa category or organisation to another, thus students should check the requirements of the preferred university.
